Writtle, once described as the ‘loveliest village in England’, has an abundance of ancient cottages around a village green, duck pond and Norman church. It is a traditional English village with a historic centre. Timbered houses, churches and a duck-pond surround the village green.
Writtle has the facilities of a modern village and is surrounded by pleasant countryside views, whilst still being in reach of Chelmsford. The duck pond on the village green is popular with residents and visitors to Writtle. Here, you can walk around the village and enjoy the Bronze Age and Iron Age artefacts that still stand to this day.
The village is home to Writtle University College, one of the UK’s oldest and largest land-based colleges, a partner institution of the University of Essex. The college offers higher education and further education, alongside apprenticeships and short courses.
Writtle hosts V Festival each year within the grounds of Hylands Park. V Festival has been running since 1997, hosting worldwide acts on their mainstages including Blur, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, David Guetta, Justin Bieber and Jay-Z. The festival is across a weekend in August, held simultaneously at Hylands Park in Chelmsford and Weston Park in South Staffordshire.
Rugby team Writtle Wanderers formed in 2002, is made up by a mix of talented individuals from local teams. They partake in games most weeks and hold a range of social events at their home base, Writtle College Baa.
