Great Baddow is an urban village and civil parish in the Chelmsford borough of Essex. It is one of the largest villages in the country, with a population of over 13,000. Great Baddow’s name is believed to have derived from the River Beadwan, now known as the River Chelmer.
In 1936, Marconi’s Wireless Telegraph Company opened the Marconi Research Laboratory in Great Baddow, which is now known as the BAE Systems. Here, various radio, television and telephony research takes place. The company expanded during the 1940s and 1950s to include research into radar, general physics, high voltage and semiconductors.
The Vineyards shopping centre in Great Baddow is home to all of the necessary facilities, including Co-op, Greggs, newsagents, takeaway restaurants and a Natwest bank. Great Baddow is also home to four popular pubs – The White Horse, The Blue Lion, The Kings Head and The Star.
