Galleywood is a village surrounded by Essex countryside, with a population of just over 5,500. Galleywood dates back to medieval times, and is now predominantly used as a rural area for visitors and residents to enjoy. The village outskirts several surviving long established working farms, some of which have buildings dating back to the 14th century.
Galleywood Common is a local nature reserve in Chelmsford, near the village of Galleywood. The common includes diverse habitants, including heathland, woodland, scrub, grassland, ponds and mire. The open fields and woodland is home to St Micheals Church, which is visible for miles around. The Common was also used as an army, artillery defence and anti-aircraft defence training ground for the duration of the First World War and Second World War.
Galleywood is also home to Chelmer Park, which has facilities for hockey, football, netball, tennis, cricket and rounders. It is also the home of Chelmsford Hockey Club, the Chelmsford Cricket Club and Galleywood Football Club. There is also a small apple orchard to visit, which are the remnants of the historic land use.
Horse riding at the Chelmsford Equestrian Centre is a popular activity for locals and visitors. It is one of the longest established riding schools and livery yards in Essex, attaining a British Horse Society (BHS) and Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) recognition. The equestrian centre hold events, riding lessons for children and adults and can host birthday parties and celebrations.
